Part 6

“Hey Pete! My dad’s friend just got me two tickets to the playoffs in two weeks. I think I can even get hold of ass the seasons tickets. Wanna go?”

“Sure man, why not. I’d love to watch the knicks play;”

It was New Year’s Eve and the city was happening. Well,
Allan out of his own way went on to fix a blind date for Pete for the New Years party.

“ I don’t want you to be alone man. When I’m having fun, you too should be having fun”, he commented.

Pete had forgotten all about the bet. It was just a few seconds to New Year and the lights were switched off and everyone started the countdown. Pete did quite like the girl he was introduced. She was Vicky (Victoria), then it was New Year and every one kissed. It was wonderful New Year’s party. That’s what Pete thought. There was merry-making and fun-n-frolic everywhere. It seemed as if everyone was enjoying the very first day of a wonderful year to be.

Well, that was where Pete was wrong. Jenny was not happy. She was obsessed with mourning over Andy. She was sitting alone in the bar. She wasn’t drinking too much.
“This sucks”, she told herself, “Steve’s right, if Andy’s dead, then I must try to move on,” saying this to herself, she tried to mingle with the crowd and party. It wasn’t easy for her.
“Jenny”, Steve waved to her.
She waved back and joined him. It was a few seconds to New Year and then celebrations began. It was 3.00 in the morning when they got back to their room.
“Jenny, don’t sleep late. We’re going skiing tomorrow”,

Steve yelled out as he dozed off. Then on the New Year’s Day, they had fun skiing, throwing snowballs at each other and even building the snowman, Steve was delighted to see Jenny in such a good mood. He was happy to be there for his little sister.
Pete went into the block opposite his, and just as he was entering the block, someone was coming out, so he had the chance to get into the apartment. As the girl passed by he enquired,
“Jenny is in the 2nd floor right?”,
“I am sorry I’m new here”, the girl replied and moved off .
“Oh boy!, that was a mere wasteful attempt,” he said to himself. “She must think that I am a moron”.
He then realized he could’ve buzzed her and waited.
“But what if she doesn’t let me in?” Anyway he was determined to meet Jennifer for better or for worse today. He scanned through the first floor.
“No luck”, then it struck him “why don’t I try it this way?” and he knocked on 1006 on second floor. The door opened, it was a grumpy old man.
“Is Jennifer there?” he enquired.
“No she lives upstairs, apartment 9015”, and the old man shut the door on his face.
Mustering courage, checking his hair and face, Pete rang the bell of 9015. He had brought flowers too. “How thoughtful of me”, he said to himself. He rang and rang there was no answer. It was almost 15 minutes and then he realized, She wasn’t home. As he was waiting for the elevator, he heard the phone ring in Jennifer’s apartment.
Jenny came home after the lovely vacation her brother had treated her to. It was the 5th of January and the day they returned Steve had to report back to duty. So he pushed off at the airport itself. Steve lived in New Jersey.
“Bye Jenny. Take care I’ll miss you. Get over Andy. I’ll call you later” and he pushed off.

Jennifer returned to her empty apartment. She lived with Andy all this time and then with his thoughts. She suddenly realized how alone she was without Andy. She saw her answering machine blink. I wonder if it’s Mom & Dad. She switched it on.

“Hi Jenny”, as she heard the voice she let out a gasp. Her heart skipped a beat.
